Bought 2 of these for my 12 year old Greyhounds to give them a little extra warmth in the winter. As dogs often paw and scratch at their beds before lying down, I learned the hard way that the faux sherpa covering sheds all over, and I have to keep vaccuming up balls of fluff from all over the room. As others have mentioned, the same size heating unit is provided regardless of the size of the bed (which is quite thin) The warming function does work though, so three stars. However,I spent over $150 on these two beds, and they really aren't worth the price being charged since the heating unit is much smaller than the bed and it sheds everywhere. I do not recommend these overall. My dog won’t lay on it. It’s not warm to the touch and he won’t stay on it long enough to get the heat to his body. I’m using it as extra padding (not plugged in) under his original dog bed.I was extremely disappointed in this bed. I have a 7 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback who likes to sleep under a blanket. We keep the house relatively cool at night during the winter (64 degrees) and the dog will often move enough throughout the night to lose his blanket and end up curled in a tight little ball to stay warm. I was very excited when the bed arrived yesterday and I pulled it out and plugged it in at bedtime last night. There were no instructions with the bed, which I thought odd, only the warnings printed on the heating element and the normal "remove this tag and go to jail" tag on the bed that usually comes on pillows and mattresses. I laid the bed out and Shisma curled up on it to go to sleep. When I woke up this morning, I put my hand on the bed, expecting to feel a cozy, radiant warmth. Nothing. Shisma was still curled in a tight ball like usual. I felt all over the bed and detected no warmth from the heating pad. I pulled up one corner and felt some heat on the bottom of the bed. The egg-crate "orthopedic" foam insulates the heating pad and doesn't allow the heat to flow through to the bed itself.I unzipped the bed and pulled the heating element out and decided at that point to return the item. The bed itself is 27" wide and 36" long. The heating element is only 6" wide and 19" long and it was placed width-wise at the top of the bed where the zipper is. I should have checked that before I went to bed, but I didn't pull the heating element out, just unzipped and peaked inside to see that it was there. Even with the element placed in the center of the bed length-wise, it only provides a small strip of heat. And to feel the heat, the bed has to be flipped upside down (or the foam inserts reversed) since the egg-crate blocks the heat from escaping to reach the dog.I had low expectations for the "orthopedic" function of the foam and was more concerned with the heat provided. However, with the heating element so small and the foam inserts so thin, I am completely disappointed in this bed and will be returning it immediately. For a third less than what I paid for this, I can purchase two heating elements separately and just insert them into a bed we already have with a zippered cover.I got this bed based on the most positive review. I obviously scanned the review, because the author clearly states their dog uses another bed. I now know why.Pros: The bed pad or cover is well constructed of a trough but comforting fabric similar to wool. Good insulator, and it looks like it will wear very well. The bed is large, and quite think (over an inch I would say after dog has been sleeping on it).Cons: The heater is he same size as the 'small' heater for the small bed, I would say 6" x 11"? The bed DOES NOT heat up. The review I read said it keeps it nice and warm, and that humans may just not feel it where a dog would. After doing a much more thorough review on the interwebs, I found that the a dog bed needs to be around 100-105F, and this bed claimed to maintain 102. This is a temperature range anybody can feel as being warm. This bed is not warm to the touch, except for directly over the center of the heating pad.The next biggest problem was the cord attached to the bed. It was very short, meaning you must either dedicate an extension cord/surge protector to your dog's bed or place the bed directly in front of a floor level outlet. My dog sleeps in the garage in the winter in front of my chest freezer. This cord was not long enough to go to the outlet at the top of the chest freezer without the corner of the bed being elevated.Overall, I would purchase the smaller pad (or 2-3, since you'll need an extension anyway), and then get your normal bed and simply place them inside that. (You should of course check with the manufacturer and then test on your own to be sure you're not going to start a fire).Bottom Line: My dog ended up chewing the cord in two to get the bed pulled down, so I'm stuck with it. It does have a great bed/cover, that I will put to good use. However, the heater included certainly was not large enough to heat the entire bed, and that's what I was looking for and believed I purchased. I don't feel like the manufacturer was honest in their description, and I won't buy a K&H product again sight unseen.Overall, just extremely disappointed with the purchase. One side is always warming... even when the dog is not on it.It’s a nice dog bed, don’t get me wrong. But it’s thin. The heating element doesn’t get very hot, which is how it’s supposed to work. But it’s almost..not even noticeable. The element is small compared to the bed, which is how it is intended so the dogs can lay on the bed on the heat or off it. That being said, my dogs are unimpressed. I haven’t noticed them laying on the heated spot any more than the unheated spots. At the end of the day, they still steal my human heating pad. This bed ended up being just an overpriced thin dog bed. I got it from Amazon Warehouse for $50. If I paid full price/$100 for it I would be enormously disappointed. The cord is to short so you'll need an extension. The foam is very low quality to. Our animals barely use it even when it's on on the winter.Quite thin... not sure what makes it "Ortho" but it does warm up just a bit and my Done seems to like it. Wish it was a little more padding.Max really likes his bed and so does Missy his mateArrived right on timeWell donePoor quality for the price. Have the outdoor heated bed and it is a way better design and much more durable.Although this works well, there must be some way to hide the cord so the dog can't chew on it.
